What is the Purpose of Modesty?
The purpose of modest dress in our religion is to enable women to protect themselves from the forbidden more easily. In modest dress, women are obligated to cover their entire bodies except for their faces and hands, and they should never go out without these clothes except for those permitted, such as their fathers or children. It is even recommended to wear a "ferace" (a long, loose outer garment) over other clothes when going out. The "ferace" is considered an inseparable part of modest dress and is the name given to a single-piece long top produced for women who dress modestly to wear over their clothes when going out. This means that even if the clothes worn by those who dress modestly are suitable for modesty, they should still wear outer garments like a "ferace" when going out. Again, suitable modest clothing models should be chosen for the inside of the "ferace," considering it might need to be removed when outdoors. It should not be forgotten that the main purpose of modesty is to cover the body lines, and the modest clothes worn should be selected from those that cover and conceal the private parts. What is the Place of Modesty in Islam?
Modesty, which is mentioned in many Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) passed down to our time, is also mentioned in our holy book, the Quran, which is the source of belief for Muslims. In the Surah An-Nur, it is explained how women should wear their headscarves. Therefore, modesty in Islam is definitely not a habit or tradition rooted in the Ottoman period, but a religious duty and responsibility. For this reason, every young girl who has reached puberty, meaning she has entered adolescence and is obligated to pray, is also obligated to cover herself. Likewise, women who were not previously covered are seen as gaining great reward by realizing this religious responsibility and covering themselves. Since it is extremely difficult for individuals who have been uncovered for many years to adopt modesty, girls should be encouraged to cover themselves as soon as they reach puberty, but they should never be forced. The clothes chosen in modest fashion must be garments that do not reveal the body lines. In other words, it is unfortunately very difficult to consider a woman who covers her head but goes out wearing tight jeans underneath as modestly dressed.www.medinetesettur.com.tr
